This is one of those neat little apps where you can honestly say ‘the sky is the limit’ when it comes to masterminding what you might use it for. Marketed as a virtual whiteboard, this app allows you to illustrate and review any number of ideas and concepts all while offering the tools to help you collaborate with others. The developers specifically take aim at schools, but I’d be willing to bet just about anybody has a use for this one.
Using this app couldn’t be easier. Grab one of the markers from the bottom of the screen, choosing a color to draw with, and away you go! You can use photography and images that are stored on your iPad for use in your scenes, giving you limitless options for extending the usefullness of the app. In fact, if you are helping your child with their homework, consider taking a photo of it with your iPad’s camera and work on the solutions with the actual material on screen.
The cool factor doesn’t end there either. Once you have your drawing complete, you can choose to add an audio explanation and then share your creation on Facebook or Twitter. As an added bonus, you can also publish your work to the ScreenChomp.com website where it will be available via a shareable anonymous link –which will also make your video available for download.
What I liked: The app is so simple to work, it really can be used by children.
What I didn’t like: While you can change the color of your marker and even identify up to three separate colors at once, you cannot change the size. It would be nice if you could alter the thickness of the drawing tools or even have a series of stamps allowing you to easily add simple shapes to your scene.
To buy or not to buy: You never know when an app like this might come in handy, especially with such a simple user interface and design. Given that the price tag reads “Free,” you should grab it and keep it filed under useful.

If you love to chat on Facebook or via Google Talk, then Tap to Chat 2 could be your new favorite app. Designed to be very easy to use, with customizable features such as font size (adjusting from very small to very large for the visually impaired) and color themes, this app can be a very handy companion.
The connections to Facebook and Google Talk appeared to be very fast and in my testing, getting connected worked flawlessly. I did have some problems with my messages to Facebook friends.
Sometimes, some of my messages were delivered to my Facebook friends’ inbox instead of as actual chat requests in real-time. A few times, I received unexplained ‘about to expire’ messages as I was waiting for my friends to reply.
There are several features that make this app competitive, including the ability to turn sound effects, chat alerts and session alerts on and off. You can decide whether to enable auto disconnect which would bring you offline when you exit the app. The other thing that can be valuable is the ability to turn the accounts online and offline individually so you can choose when and where you are available.
A single purchase gets you up and running on your iPhone, iPod and iPad.
What I liked: The app is very attractive and nicely laid out. It advertises as being super-simple to use and I would definitely agree. I had my accounts set-up in a matter of moments and was ready to chat!
What I didn’t like: I don’t see a significant amount of value in a chat app that doesn’t connect to more services, especially when so many of the well rated all-in-one chat apps also support Facebook Chat and Google Talk. However, the developer has advertised adding AIM and MSN soon, so this may be a good app to keep an eye on.
To buy or not to buy: If you primarily use Facebook and Google Talk social networking services, this app should perform nicely for you. If you are a more social butterfly and require other services, your money could be better spent toward a more inclusive app.

As we reported last week, there was an explosion and subsequent fire at Foxconn’s iPad Manufacturing Plant in Chengdu, China on May 20th, which killed three people and left 20 injured.
According to DigiTimes, Foxconn suspended production of the iPad 2 at the explosion site until a full investigation by local officials could be completed. However, Foxconn informed its upstream component suppliers that it does not expect this shut down to result in an iPad shortage.
Assembly lines where the iPad is actually made are not affected by the shut down. Foxconn’s Shenzen, China plant, the more established and larger of the two operations, can increase its manufacturing efforts to make up the gap caused by the slow down at Chengdu.
Foxconn’s Chendgu plant recently opened, joining its Shenzen plant, and was only responsible for manufacturing 25-30% of the tablets built in April. According to DigiTimes:
Foxconn’s goal was to ramp up iPad 2 production at the Chengdu factory site to 3-4 million units in the second quarter from about 600,000 in the first, with an aim to grow the monthly figure to 13-14 million in the second half of 2011. Meanwhile, Foxconn’s Shenzhen production base will increase production of iPad 2 at a slower pace. Monthly output from the site is expected to increase to 4-5 million units a month in the second quarter from 1.8-2 million in the first, and ultimately reach 9-10 million units in the second half.
While the recent events at Chengdu will certainly slow Foxconn’s goals for its newest plant at the moment, Foxconn has offered no evidence that the company has altered its quarterly manufacturing goals, which would have Chengdu outpacing Shenzen in production by the second half of the fiscal year.

Amazon is stepping up its fight against Apple’s iPad with its latest round of Kindle TV commercials. Earlier today, Amazon aired a new TV commercial taking direct aim at the iPad and showed the problems of reading an iPad in direct sunlight. The commercial goes on to portray the Kindle superior to the iPad in several key areas.
The commercial features a lady fumbling with her iPad as she tries to read her screen but is unable to see it due to the extreme glare. Most multitouch glass displays have problems in bright sunlight and Apple’s iPad is no exception. The Kindle, unlike the iPad, uses an e-ink display which looks more like a traditional newspaper or magazine and is easy to read in direct sunlight.
The commercial’s key Kindle highlights:
- Has over 800,000 books – Amazon has more books than what’s available in Apple’s iBookstore
- No Glare – The iPad’s glass screen is prone to glare in harsh lighting conditions
- Easy to read in bright sunlight
- lighter than a paperback – the iPad weighs 1.5 pounds versus 0.54 for the Kindle 3
- Battery life of up to a month – while the Kindle can last a month, you need to turn off all wireless functions otherwise battery life is about a week. The iPad has a rated battery life of 10 hours under normal use.
The Kindle’s e-ink display, while limited to basic pictures and text, has long been a key selling point and it looks like Amazon wants to make sure everyone knows that the iPad is not necessarily better than the new $139 Kindle for certain tasks. If you want to do anything other than read books, the iPad is a much better choice. It will also be interesting to see if Apple will improve the upcoming iPad 2′s screen quality to better compete against the Kindle in bright lighting conditions.

Whoever came up with the saying “you get what you pay for” never played Can Knockdown on an iPad. The game is an iPad remake of the classic carny game that you’ve probably played as a kid. Take a ball and try to knock down cans stacked on a shelf. While the rules might be simple, actually knocking all the cans off the shelf can be a challange and that’s where the fun lies.
You start the game with three cans stacked on top of each other sitting on a shelf. Take aim with your ball and fling it at the cans to try and knock them off the shelf to rack up points and advance to the next level. You have five balls to use to complete a level so if you don’t get it on the first try, don’t worry. However if you do have perfect aim, you can rack up point multipliers for knocking all cans down with a single shot. Multipliers are a great way to really rack up the points.
The game adds a few elements you’ve probably not seen at your local amusement park. Some levels have special exploding cans which can help you quickly clear a level with a single shot. In addition to the exploding variety, there are also Extra Ball cans which, you guessed it, gives you an extra ball.
One of the most rewarding parts of the game is watching the slow-motion instant replays whenever you make a particularly good shot. The game’s nice graphics and high quality physics engine makes it feel like you’re knocking down real cans at an amusement park.
Can Knockdown is a fun game to play and is surprisingly addictive. The free version can become a bit repetitive and it’s certainly not a game you’d play for hours on end but it’s a great diversion when you have a few extra minutes at the airport or sitting around the house.
What I liked: Great graphics and easy to play. Fun way to waste some time on your iPad
What I didn’t like: Levels can become a bit repetitive.
To buy or not to buy: It’s simple, addictive and free. Go ahead and grab a copy from the App Store.
