iOS Dominates Mobile App Revenue – Millennial Media Report

According to the latest Millennial Media report Apple’s iOS ecosystem makes up just 28% of the total smartphone market share but remarkably generated over 50% of all app revenue.

Millennial Media’s April Mobile Device Index released earlier today showed Apple was behind Android in terms of smartphone impression share for the fifth consecutive month. Android captured a 53% impression share while Apple lingered behind with a 28% share. But counting ad impressions doesn’t tell the whole story.

Overall iOS impressions have increased 47% since January, while Android impressions have grown 19%. Among mobile device makers, Apple continues to lead with over 30% of all ads served. Samsung, HTC, RIM and Motorola round off the top five.

When breaking down revenue generated by apps, 50% came from iOS apps, a 6% month-over-month growth for Apple. Android apps, on the other hand, represented 39%. Gaming led the top category for apps in the Millennial Media’s network, making up 32% of all app impressions.

For the first time, Millennial Media’s list of Top 20 Mobile Phones included solely smartphone devices, highlighting the increasing popularity of the devices. Apple did, however, once again sit atop the lists for Top 15 Manufacturers and Top 20 Mobile Phone based on the number of ad impressions.

Apple’s iPhone is still the leading device on Millennial Media’s network with 20% of all ad impressions. RIM’s BlackBerry Curve held the number two spot with a 5.29% share of ad impressions and the HTC Evo was able to edge out the Samsung Nexus to achieve the number three spot with a 3.11% share of ad impressions.

Not surprisingly, the popularity of connected devices like the iPad continues to grow, accounting for a 200% growth in impressions from Q4 2010 to Q1 2011.

Apple iOS Outreaches Android by 59%

We’ve all read news reports on Android’s quickly increasing grasp of the smartphone market but new data released from comScore has highlighted the fact that the iOS platform, overall, on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches is used by 37.9 million users in the United States, while the Android platform (including Android phones and connected media devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab) has a user base of only 23.8 million. Apple has access to 16.2% of the 234 million mobile platform users, giving them a much greater reach than Android’s 10.2% share.

Interestingly, comScore has determined that the Apple user base is made up of more than just Apple fanatics. Only 10.5% of iOS users access the system from more than one device, such as an iPhone and an iPad. According to Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president, “These data clearly illustrate the Apple ecosystem extends far beyond the iPhone. Though it’s frequently assumed that the Apple user base is composed of dedicated Apple ‘fanboys’, there’s not a tremendous amount of overlapping mobile device access among these users. This of course has significant implications for the developer community as they consider the market potential in developing applications for different mobile platforms.”

While Apple iPhone users do account for the largest share of iPad owners at 27.3%, 17.5% of iPad users have a BlackBerry, and 14.2% use an Android phone. According to this data, the majority of iPad owners are not Apple addicts. Most iPad owners are using phones made by competing companies, and all of these companies – Samsung, Motorola, LG, RIM – have tablets of their own.

Apple may be slightly behind in the mobile phone market (though the Verizon iPhone is helping to fill that gap), but the iPad is clearly dominating tablet devices, and will continue to do so as long as there continues to be no Android tablet that can compete with it. Android phones may outsell iPhones, but Apple still has the competitive edge with a much greater share of the entire mobile market.

comScore reports that it will release European data from iPads and other connected media devices soon.

iPad Sees Continued Growth in Mobile Ad Impressions

Mobile advertising company Millennial Media reported today that Android phones continue to lead ad impressions across its advertising network. Android phones claimed 48% of all ad impressions putting it ahead of the iPhone, which had 31%.

In their March report, tablets saw one of the largest jumps of over 21% month-over-month and now make up 17% of all device impressions on Millennial Media’s network. The iPad continues to be one of the most popular devices and saw a 7% month-over-month growth in the number of ads requested.

While Apple devices had only 31% of Millennial Media’s ad impression share, they produced 47% of the app revenue. Apple’s results were helped by growing iPad demand and an increase in iPad applications. Android held the second spot with a 36% share of the app advertising revenue.

In Millennial’s March report, the iPhone held 19.24% of the ad impression market share, a 4% increase over the previous month. The jump was tied to the increase of Verizon iPhone impressions, which accounted for over 8% of the U.S. iPhone impressions. The Blackberry Curve, with 5.3% of all ad impressions, edged out the HTC EVO to earn the second spot on Millennial Media’s top 20 smartphone list.

Among mobile device makers, Apple continues to lead with 32.08% of all ads served. Samsung and HTC had another strong month with 15.22% and 10.69% market share this past month, putting them in second and third place respectively.

D-Link Releases WiFi Camera with Night Vision for iPad and iPhone

Network equipment maker D-Link just took the wraps off of their latest WiFi network camera with all new support for the Apple iPad. The Day/Night Wireless N Camera (DCS-932L) is built on the company’s previously released WiFi enabled network camera but adds night Infrared (IR) lighting to viewing objects up to a distance of 16 feet.

The DCS-932L supports 802.11 n and can stream motion JPEG video at 20 frames per second. The camera easily connects to a WiFi network thanks to its support for WiFI Protected Setup (WPS). Once the camera is connected to your WiFi network, you can easily connect to the camera by using the browser on your computer.

Apple iPhone and iPad owners have it even easier thanks to a dedicated D-Link app. A free mydlink app is available for iPhone and iPod Touch owners and allows users to view video from any D-Link network enabled camera. For even more viewing options, iPad users will soon be able to use an all new iPad app which allows users to connect and view up to four camera video feeds simultaneously.

The D-Link solution is a perfect way to remotely monitor your home, office or any other spot close to a power outlet. Users can connect to the camera over WiFi or a 3G cellular wireless network and see what’s going on while they are out of town.

D-Link’s DSC-932L network camera goes on sale in Q2 and will sell for under $150. The free mydlink iPhone app is already available in the App Store, with the iPad version expected later this quarter and will initially be free. The mydlink apps will work with any D-Link mydlink network camera.

Apple to Release CDMA iPhone – Ups Shipment Targets

Based on the number of empty Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad store shelves we’ve seen, this holiday season has been a good one for Apple. This positive momentum is echoed by the Taiwanese website DigiTimes who reports Apple has raised their global iPhone shipment goals for 2011.

According to a Taiwanese component supplier, Apple has upped their 1Q 2011 goals to 20-21 million units. Apple’s original target was 19 million iPhones for 1Q. The interesting part of the news is that the reported supplier indicates the iPhone shipments will be a mix of two different iPhone versions. One will be the standard WCDMA, this is a GSM / UMTS handset like the current iPhone 4, and the other is a CDMA based handset. CDMA is the wireless radio technology used by Verizon which would indicate a Verizon iPhone is indeed in the works and should be available the first quarter of next year.

According to DigiTimes, “The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units.”

It’s long been rumored that Verizon would launch an iPhone in 2011. Verizon began selling iPads bundled with MiFi CDMA / WiFi routers earlier this year and many saw this as a clear sign that the two companies would be cooperating more closely as the exclusivity contract with AT&T expired.

This move could also signal that Apple will include multiband radios in future iPads as well, allowing Apple to get wider distribution here in the US for both the iPhone and iPad products. Verizon has aggressively been pushing Android based handsets and many credit this push with the OS’s explosive growth. By partnering with Verizon on distribution, many analysts believe Apple can continue to grow their market share for the iPhone and iPad.

Secret iPad K48 Supplier Probed for Possible Securities Fraud

According to a criminal complaint filed by the United Staes Attorney’s office, an Apple supplier has been involved in a conspiracy to commit securities fraud. In the complaint, Flextronics employee Walter Shimoon is accused of divulging “material nonpublic information” about Apple’s iPhone and iPad to an analyst at a hedge fund in New York City.

The FBI secretly recorded Shimoon as he allegedly told the analyst, who is now a “cooperating witness”, details about Apple iPhone sales numbers weeks before Apple disclosed their quarterly financial results to the public.

Apple is know for their tight secrecy around new products. Someone with inside information on what Apple might be launching next could prove very valuable to someone looking to make a quick buck off of Apple’s stock.

The complaint is filled with interesting information on what the Flextronics supplier revealed, including details about the not yet released iPhone 4 and iPad. Shimoon is reported to have informed the witness that the iPhone 4 was “coming out early next year” and that “it’ll be a neat phone ’cause it’s gonna have five-megapixel auto-focus camera and it will have a VGA forward-facing video conferencing camera.”

The recording also captured a conversation about Apple’s new iPad. “They [Apple] have a code name for something new…it’s a new category altogether. And, uh, I speculate, it doesn’t have a camera in it, what I figured out. So I speculated that it’s probably a reader…Yeah, I believe it’s called K, K48. That’s the internal name…So you can get, at Apple you can get fired for saying K48…outside of a, you know, outside of a meeting that doesn’t have K48 people in it. That’s how crazy they are about it.”

Shimoon faces multiple charges and until he was fired last month, was doing business development for Flextronics. Flextronics is one of Apple’s main suppliers and does work on iPhone, iPad and iPod products.

If you’re interested, checkout the full criminal complaint and scroll down to page 27 to read where Shimoon spills the beans on various Apple products.

iPad and iPhone Top Yahoo!’s Most Searched Items for 2010

Yahoo! released their annual list of top searched terms for 2010 and as you can imagine, there were lots of searches for the latest celebrity gossip about Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga along with major news events like the World Cup and the Gulf oil spill. In between searching for the latest news stories and celebrity rumors, people also found time to look for two of Apple’s most popular gadgets.

Yahoo! analyzed search queries from over 631 million people and tallied up the results to create their Top 10 Searches and Top 10 Obsessions of 2010 lists. The popularity of the fourth generation Apple iPhone helped catapult it to the sixth spot on the Top 10 search list and it was the only gadget to make it into the Top 10. For Yahoo!’s Top 10 Obsessions list, the iPhone came out on top in the number one spot, while the iPad held the number three position.

The iPhone and iPad were the only tech products to make it into the Top 10 of any of Yahoo!’s lists. Both devices were helped by all the buzz surrounding their highly anticipated launches. Searches for the iPhone rocketed after an early prototype of the device was left at a bar by an Apple employee and then later sold to popular tech blog Gizmodo. Searches for the iPad were high at the start of the year following Apple’s unveiling in January and subsequent sales launch in April.

The large public interest in both Apple iOS gadgets has also translated into record sales for the company. Both products posted record sales numbers for a tech gadget in 2010. The iPad was the fastest selling technology product ever, selling more than 1 million units in less than 28 days. However the iPad’s record was surpassed by the subsequent iPhone 4 launch which posted sales of 1.7 million units in only three days.

iPad and iPhone Amongst Top Items of ‘Black Friday’ Buying Predictions!

Making plans and saving money for Black Friday? You may want to know that the iPad and iPhone are amongst the most sought items according to the folks at BlackFriday.com. If you plan to get one of these gadgets, make plans now!

For some of our international readers, Black Friday happens every year. In the U.S., the day after Thanksgiving has been given that name due to the large number of discounted deals offered by stores to all shoppers for one day. And, the folks of well known site BlackFriday.com have shared a preview of what their online shoppers expect to buy this coming holiday season.

BlackFriday.com ran a survey in October. The Black Friday survey reveals that 91 percent of U.S. consumers expect retail Black Friday activity to be at least as big as 2009, and almost 60 percent believe it will be much bigger.

But, what caught my attention is how many technology gadgets are being targeted by consumers this year. Consumers, in general, have become more tech savvy, or for sure their kids have made them aware of technology. If we look at the Black Friday survey, 6 out of 12 categories fall into the technology segment. And, 4 of the top 5 categories are simply related to gadgets and gear.

All survey respondents were asked to predict the hottest individual product for Black Friday 2010. The results show the iPad at the top of the list, and the iPhone in third place following Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect. The following list shows the 15 most popular predictions.

  1. Apple iPad
  2. Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect
  3. Apple iPhone
  4. Sony HDTV
  5. Blu-Ray
  6. HTC Droid
  7. Canon Digital Camera
  8. Samsung 3D TV
  9. Dell Laptop
  10. Amazon Kindle
  11. Apple iPod Touch
  12. HP Mini Netbook
  13. Flip Video Camcorder
  14. VIZIO LCD HDTV
  15. Xbox 360 Gaming Console

If these predictions become a reality, we could potentially have a crazy spending holiday season where everyone will be showing off their latest gadget. If you review the predictions carefully, the top 15 list consists mostly of what I call “connected devices”. That’s correct. Devices and gadgets that will keep you online, will give you access to stream all kinds of content, and many of them will give you access to lots of applications. This is a great opportunity for all developers and creative minds out there.

What are your plans for Black Friday? Do you have a shopping list already? What are your predictions for this holiday season? Share your comments with us!
