Bear Grylls – Bear Essentials

Bear Grylls’ introduces you to Some of His Favorite Hotels from Around the World. Just Kidding!

If I could take one thing with me on a desert island than it would be Bear Grylls, the former military survival expert and generally tougher than a tough thing TV star is now sharing his skills with you on your iPad. The app itself is very well presented and easy to use but in terms of content, considering the premium price is a little light!

The 18 chapters feature a total of 40 video clips, 35 interactive features, a fitness routine and various mini-games and features. These vary from useful – the compass – to filler – bear’s favorite inspirational quotes, anyone?

It is hard to judge this app too harshly as the limited information featured is very useful and during testing my chances of surviving for longer than five minutes in the wild have definitely improved. Yet the price point sets the bar a little higher than the content delivers.

Orbitz Hotels – iPad App Review

If you’re planning a summer holiday this year, you may want to check out the new Orbitz – Hotels app that Orbitz released today for the iPad.

The Orbitz Hotels app features an intuitive search and booking experience that was specially designed for the iPad. Search the entire selection of Orbitz hotels, compare lodgings, and book your stay in just three quick taps.

When the app is opened, it detects your current location and displays all the hotels in the area, along with prices. A search in my area found 371 nearby hotels. A tap on a desired hotel will reveal more information about the area, the room, and the reviewer score, so you’re always sure to find the highest rated hotels at the best prices.

Enter your desired dates at the top, along with the number of people staying. Then use the search bar to enter the location where you want to stay and tap enter, which will then display hotels in the area.

Hotel results can be filtered by amenities, locations (neighborhoods), star ratings, user reviews, and hotel chain. Multiple filters can be selected, so if you’re searching for a pet friendly hotel with wireless access and a tennis court, the app will display the hotels only with your exact specifications. This function is really easy to use and will help you book the perfect hotel in no time at all.

You can’t filter results by miles, but the app does display a map that shows the locations of all the hotels around the destination that you entered. Pinching to zoom in and out is enabled, so you can view the hotels in specific areas. All in all, the map function, along with advanced filtering, makes finding a place to stay incredibly easy.

Once you’ve decided where you want to stay, tapping “book now” will immediately transfer you to the checkout window, where you enter your information and credit card details to book the room right away. From searching to booking, it takes just a few taps and a few minutes to find a hotel.

If you’re planning a vacation or just need to book a last minute stay somewhere, this app is a great choice to help you find all the best deals in the area quickly, and with no hassle. If you travel at all, Orbitz Hotels is a must have app that will save you time and frustration.

What I liked: The interface is simple, streamlined, and easy to use. It’s a much better option than booking on the web, because it can be done in just a few clicks and all the hotel information you want is displayed right in front of you.

What I didn’t like: I would have liked to be able to select a radius around the area I was searching in, to eliminate hotels that were too far away. For some reason, I couldn’t search for hotels in certain areas, like Oahu, which kept taking me to Pennsylvania.

To buy or not to buy: This is a free app, that’s absolutely worth downloading if you’re going to be booking a hotel in the near future. Download it, check it out, and keep it in mind next time you need to find lodgings for a vacation, work trip, or a short getaway.
